pink. bathroom. year end 2008.

December 31st, 2008

So it is the end of 2008. I keep reading all these random things online about how shitty 2008 was or how so many people had bad years. They must be the wrong astrological sign or something cause I thought 2008 was GREAT. For reals. I think it was one of the better years on my books. Not really for any specific reason I think- though all our vacations and the new car help!. Maybe it is time and age. Maybe it is that Jason is awesome. Maybe it is that I finally am working on doing what I want with my life. Maybe it is that I finally have a better idea of what that is. Either way I am blessed with great friends and family and I am excited about 2009.

I want to be this woman when I am 96. She has lived above Carnegie Hall for over 60 years and is now fighting eviction.

The “Duchess of Carnegie” has also been called “Portrait Photographer to the Stars”.

She still uses an 8×10 camera and has a myspace.

December 29th, 2008

I love how California (or at least our part!) can have a little bit o’ rain and they call it a “storm”. Then it is back to 60 degrees while the rest of the country in buried in snow. This may be the single reason why it is so expensive to live here. Week two of two weeks off starts today and I am vowing to myself that this week I will do more than play freecell in my pj’s all day. I did kink my neck and it was the holidays and I was sick, so that can be an excuse. But still think of all the things I *could* be doing! We fixed the buttons but now I must figure out the ‘categories’ cause I know you care SO much.

photo: because what else should you take pictures of when you have one last shot on the roll of film and you are down the street from the film developing place? this might have been safer if i was not driving and had better alignment and wasn’t shooting a manual camera. it has been very cold. after tomorrow i have two weeks off from work. keep your fingers crossed that i finish the website, shannon visits, i get another photo shoot done and dave can finagle work to join becky and us for new years.

I was really taken with the photos Brad Pitt took of Angelina Jolie and their family for W Magazine a few months back- not so much because of the subjects, but because of the way he executed it. He used an old camera and film they no longer made. He took a zillion shots and I think W magazine took a nice risk with it. There used to be a ton of photos on their site, but it looks like not so much anymore. I wish I would have bought the issue when it was out. But this one is my favorite.

I need to develop some film.

holga.big sur.

December 11th, 2008

I have a love/hate relationship with my holga. Maybe it is the perfectionist in me, but the fact that it does not have a *focus* drives me BONKERS. I can get some really awesome shots. But for the most part they make me sad. It reminds me of when I first started taking pictures- only a few on a roll were any good. But maybe the holga is good for me in that sense- keeps my expectations at bay. Forcing me to feel comfortable with failure. In reality all it really makes me want is a real medium format camera. With a focus. And settings.

obama pups

December 10th, 2008

I love me some puppies. And I love me some Obama. The picture on the left is part of the book “A Rare Breed of Love” which chronicles the story of the poodle Baby who was rescued from a puppy mill.

The photo shows Obama with “Baby,” a three-legged dog that lost its fourth limb following years of mistreatment at a California puppy mill. The toy poodle spent much of its life locked in a small wire cage. The breeders cut out Baby’s vocal chords so that they would not have to hear her cries. In cages next to her, other dogs literally went insane, spinning repetitively with blank stares. Still others were gravely ill, maimed and had filthy, matted coats. A number was tattooed on the inside of Baby’s ear, marking her as just one of many dogs at the mill.

And the New Yorker cover is just silly. I saw it this weekend and have not been able to get it out of my head.

tell me my future

December 9th, 2008

I have always wanted to have my tarot read, but I am cheap and too much of a baby in case the future is bad. I am sure it is not, cause I am pretty lucky lady, but still, I would not want a bad reading. Now palm reading, that I could do.
